    Distributed computing systems are of huge importance in a number of recently established and future functions in computer science. For example, they are vital to banking applications, communication of electronic systems, air traffic control, manufacturing automation, biomedical operation works, space monitoring systems and robotics information systems. As the nature of computing comes to be increasingly directed towards intelligence and autonomy, intelligent computations will be the key for all future applications. Intelligent distributed computing will become the base for the growth of an innovative generation of intelligent distributed systems. Nowadays, research centres require the development of architectures of intelligent and collaborated systems; these systems must be capable of solving problems by themselves to save processing time and reduce costs. Building an intelligent style of distributed computing that controls the whole distributed system requires communications that must be based on a completely consistent system. The model of the ideal system to be adopted in building an intelligent distributed computing structure is the human body system, specifically the body’s cells. As an artificial and virtual simulation of the high degree of intelligence that controls the body’s cells, this chapter proposes a Cell-Oriented Computing model as a solution to accomplish the desired Intelligent Distributed Computing system

    An ambient agent architecture exploiting automated cognitive analysis

    In this paper an agent-based ambient agent architecture is presented based on monitoring human's interaction with his or her environment and performing cognitive analysis of the causes of observed or predicted behaviour. Within this agent architecture, a cognitive model for the human is taken as a point of departure. From the cognitive model it is automatically derived how internal cognitive states affect human's performance aspects. Furthermore, for these cognitive states representation relations are derived from the cognitive model, expressed by temporal specifications involving events that will be monitored. The representation relations are verified on the monitoring information automatically, resulting in the identification of cognitive states, which affect the performance aspects. In such a way the ambient agent model is able to provide a more in depth cognitive analysis of causes of (un)satisfactory performance and based on this analysis to generate interventions in a knowledgeable manner. The application of the architecture proposed is demonstrated by two examples from the ambient-assisted living domain and the computer-assisted instruction domain. © 2011 The Author(s)

    Abstract. Interaction is an essential feature in multiagent systems. De-sign primitives are needed to explicitly model desired patterns. This work presents 2COMM as a framework for defining social relations among parties, represented by social commitments. Starting from the definition of interaction protocols, 2COMM allows to decouple interaction design from agent design. Currently, adapters were developed for allowing the use of 2COMM with the JADE and the JaCaMo platforms. We show how agents for the two platforms can be implemented by relying on a common programming schema

    An Agent-based Approach for Structured Modeling, Analysis and Improvement of Safety Culture

    Safety culture is broadly recognized as important for operational safety in various fields, including air traffic management, power plant control and health care. Previous studies addressed characterization and assessment of safety culture extensively. Nevertheless, relations between safety culture and formal and informal organizational structures and processes are yet not well understood. To address this gap, a new, formal, agent-based approach is proposed. This paper shows the application of the approach to an air navigation service provider, including structured modeling, analysis and identification of improvement strategies for the organizational safety culture. The model results have been validated using safety culture data that had been achieved by an independent safety culture survey study. © 2011 The Author(s)

    Modelling a Society of Simple Agents: from Conceptual Specification to Experimentation

    In this paper, the compositional multi-agent modelling framework DESIRE is not only successfully used to develop a conceptual specification of the simple agents discussed in (Cesta et al. 1996), but also to simulate the behaviour in a dynamic environment. In the DESIRE framework, a conceptual specification, which provides a high-level view of an agent, has enough detail for automatic prototype generation. The prototype implementation of the conceptual specification of the simple agents has been used to replicate and extend one of the experiments reported in (Cesta et al. 1996)
